Alamogordo~ Defining a Community

I took this photo in 2007, but it captivates me.  The owner of this home painted this tree because his son was sent to Iraq.  The tree became a father's hope.  Such a simple but powerful message, that had I not taken the time to find out the why's- I would have chuckled at an eccentric member of the community.  Now I tear up just sharing about a father and his love for his son.

Alamogordo~Flair for Food

As with the world, food is a mainstay for weary travelers everywhere, but unfamiliar with a community many opt for chain restaurants and fast food.  To get to know Alamogordo and its blending of several cultures I offer a tour of some off the beaten path restaurants as well as a few not so off the path, but still unique to here!
El Camino is known for its Mexican flair in its food.  It is located one block north of 10th St. on White Sands Blvd.

El Camino in Spanish is translated as the road, the way or the path.

Gigi's Pizza has been in business for 26 years.  Although technically a chain restaurant, the buffet style allows for an incredible dining experience.

The Rocket of Rocket National Buffet.  When directing folks here for the first time we need only mention the rocket out front.

Rocket National Buffet offers Chinese food in Alamogordo.  It is located on White Sands Blvd

Here is My Mother's Place.  Do I need to say more? (located on White Sands Blvd. parking in rear)

Caliche's on White Sands Blvd also.  I made this rustic as it feels like you have crossed back to a by-gone era when walking up to the order window.

Side view of Caliche's. The bold pink and blues make the dining experience pop. Caliche's is a place for you to pick up your food, as it does not have an inside dining room.  Do not be discouraged as the have comfy benches for you to eat your custard in the evenings of New Mexico.

Here is the menu board with my date for the afternoon, when I took these photos.  Caliche's brings out the youth in even us not so young folks! Caliche's has a variety of "dogs" to die for!

Can't miss the sign for Caliche's~ it is calling.
Caliche's is unique to New Mexico as a New Mexican business founded in 1996 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They are slowly spreading through the southwest though...better come here and enjoy Caliche's custard and Desert Ice while you wait!
